Kemba Najuma Opio

Austin-based contemporary figurative painter and multidisciplinary artist Kemba Najuma Opio, utilizes a range of mediums such as illustration, painting, mixed-media,
photography, and most recently, sculptural metal, aiming to explore the beauty and complexities
around the human experience.

Addressing themes of symbolism, duality, and our evolving identity,
her work, which incorporates patterns and written text on striking figurative images or subjects,
blends tradition with contemporary expression.

Kemba received her BFA in fashion design with a minor in painting from Savannah College of Art & Design. Since 2008, she has exhibited her work nationally at venues like Hammond House Museum (Atlanta), Venice Arts Center (LA), Center of Contemporary Art (Seattle), and ArtSpace 111 (Fort Worth).

Her public art journey began in 2016 with a commission from the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, followed by her first permanent installation in 2018. Kemba’s sculptural public works can now be found in cities including Denver and Austin, as she continues to experiment with new media.
